Biography

Dr. Marti Head is director of the Joint Institute for Biological Sciences, a collaborative research effort between Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the University of Tennessee focused on new approaches to drug development, personalized treatment, diagnosis and prediction of outcomes in health management. Previous to joining Oak Ridge, Marti built the Insights from Data team at GlaxoSmithKline Pharmaceuticals, led a collaboration between GSK and Palantir, and was for many years GSK’s Senior Director of Computational Chemistry US.

Abstract

Scaling the Complexity of Human Biology and Health

Marti Head

Director, Joint Institute of Biological Sciences

Oak Ridge National Laboratory

The NIH Precision Medicine Initiative describes precision medicine as “an emerging approach for disease treatment and prevention that takes into account individual variability in genes, environment, and lifestyle for each person”.  However, the biological aspects of precision medicine extend beyond variation in genes alone to encompass variation in the networks of gene products and biological processes unique to each individual.  Understanding and modulating these networks for individual patients will require vast amounts of genetic, pharmacokinetic, and phenotypic data and new computational and experimental approaches.  This talk will describe how the computing resources and Summit exascale computer along with experimental capabilities across Oak Ridge National Laboratory are being applied to characterize the effects of variation of genes, protein networks, and biological processes on patient health.
